Thermo Socks from a Doctor´s viewpoint
A longer stay outside in the cold, as is common in our part of the world in the winter, has long been discussed as a possible cause for colds. Meanwhile, we know that withdrawing body warmth alone does not cause colds. However, the changes in the body make the beginning of a cold more likely. Thus, it was investigated whether or not cold temperatures can lead to a change in the immune system and lead to possible points of attack: For one thing, the amount of ICAM-1 receptors changes due the cold. These are responsible for the adhesion of white blood cells, which are needed on a cellular level by the immune system. Another thing is that the cold has an inhibiting effect on the ciliated epithelium in the area of the air passages. Thus, the influence of cold air on the cilia can no longer efficiently remove slime and pathogens from the respiration tract. Furthermore, the constriction of the small bronchial tubes due to the cold air promotes infections as well. Thus, all of these studies suggest that the environmental impact of coldness has a favourable influence on the development of infections. Dr. Werner Kommer |
